In 2004 I was on safari in Kenya. At lunch one day we stopped in a small village and the little kids approached us begging for pens so we bought some at the local “shop” and handed them out. Later as we were walking down the village street I spotted a group of children playing ball. On closer inspection I realized that they were playing soccer with rolled up plastic bags bound together with rubber bands – that was their soccer ball. I have invited to visit one of their schools and was dismayed to discover that the school had practically no resources.
There are times in life when one comes to a crossroad and life changes direction. That moment for me was on that dusty street in the village of Nyadorea Kenya. I came home from that holiday determined to do something about getting school supplies to that village. Since then I have raised funds, flown to Nairobi, purchased basic school supplies such as pens and paper, soccer balls and rubber thongs (these little guys have no shoes) hired drivers, vans and camp hands and personally delivered the materials to the village schools. These children are clever and very keen for an education. They speak Swahili, English and a local language. Barefoot, they love to go to school, without a pen and sometimes without lunch.
It is a hard slog keeping this project going, what with the global crunch, tsunamis, hurricanes, bush fires and war zones.
Education is the right of all children of the world - it is not a privilege and Kids in Kenya as a registered charity aims to assist in the education of many disadvanaged children in Kenya and elswwhere. I need all the help I can get!
